Wraparound Support
Strategies
- Set up a student/teacher meeting to give the student the attention he or she may need (Claassen, 2008)
- Utilize school counselors/SPED staff and any additional insights they can offer
- Contact parents (phone calls/emails) since family members can have a great influence on students (Claassen, 2008)
- Utilize student-led support programs so that students can get help from other students (Olson, 2009)
- Contact administration staff if disciplinary action is needed
- Convene a Student Success Team, keeping in mind that the focus is to help solve the issue so that the student can continue to learn (Kohn, 1996)
- Put parents in touch with outside programs/support, depending on the issue. Parents may also be aware of the student's other behaviors/interests that the teacher is not aware of, so their influence is very important (Olson, 2009)
Philosophical Grounding
I think it is important to see the school as a system. In order to educate a student to the best of our abilities, that system has to be functioning properly, with each component performing to the best of its abilities. Therefore, in order to help a student overcome a particular challenge or issue, it may be necessary to engage multiple components, or even all of the components, of the system. I think that it is important that students, teachers, staff, and parents all work together and communicate to help a student achieve success.
