Strategies
- Allow the student to explain him/herself instead of making assumptions about a student's behavior (Olson, 2009)
- Use constructive reminders to help a student stay on-task (Claassen, 2008) without making a bigger scene out of the issue. Certain web apps can be used to display reminders to students to help them stay on task when working on a computer (Momentum, other apps)
- Remind the student of your expectations for their behavior (Wong, 1998)
- Remind students of the guidelines that were agreed upon by the class during the beginning of the school year and of that student's commitment to those guidelines (Wong, 1998)
- Use a badge-based system to help gamify the classroom and help students feel a sense of accomplishment for what they've completed, possibly motivating them to continue working
Philosophical Grounding
A large part of my teaching philosophy involves encouraging students to be accountable for their own actions rather than punishing them for breaking rules. In my classroom, I want the students to be responsible for helping to make the class rules/guidelines so that the students are committed not just to me but to themselves and their classmates. I think giving students a certain level of autonomy and responsibility is necessary in a classroom, especially if we want to encourage students to become kind, supportive, and productive citizens now and in the future.
